Vaginal Surgery
The vagina is a like a loose tube. It is suspended in the tummy by uterus above. It is further held in place by a set of muscles and fascia around it.
A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the vagina. This is done by removing excess vaginal lining and tightening the surrounding soft tissues and muscles.
During delivery of a baby the vagina and surrounding tissues and muscles become stretched. After delivery the vagina may return to a more "normal" size, but it often fails to return to its' pre pregnancy diameter. Generally, the more vaginal deliveries, the worse the condition gets.
Many women will complain of decreased sensation and sexual satisfaction during intercourse. A loose vagina may interfere with the sexual pleasure to both the partners. Extreme of looseness will give rise to prolapse. Kegel exercises are often recommended but rarely succeed in restoring vaginal tightness.
Vaginoplasty
Vaginal tightening surgery will tighten the vagina and surrounding tissues yielding a vaginal tightness similar to before the patient had children.
Case Selection:
- The lady should not have vaginal infection. If it be, then the infection must be eradicated first.
- The vagina should be loose. But not loose enough to give prolapse.
- If there is prolapse , it should be operated first or may be concurrently.
- Any urinary infection or perineal skin infection should be treated first.
- The operation is done under general or regional anaesthesia.
Postoperative:
Patient is awake at the end of surgery. There may be discomfort for first few days.
- The operated area will heal in 10 days. The sutures would dissolve away.
- The tissue would be firm in three weeks. Full healing takes approximately six weeks. After six weeks the patient can do exercises to get better in the muscle tone and have a better grip.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Take good rest for 10 days.
- No intercourse for six weeks.
- Continue with exercises for 6 months.
Hymenopalsty
The Hymen is a thin layer of tissues at vaginal opening.
Hymen gets disrupted after the first intercourse or even after strenuous physical activity or use of tampon.
Procedure:
- Reconstruction of the Hymen is hymenoplasty.
- The surgery is done by piecing together the remnant by closing the tear. It is a simple procedure and could be in three to seven day. The hymen tissue is pulled together so vagina will again covered by it. It is procedure that can be done under local anaesthetic and done as a day care surgery. If there are no remnants of hymen then a neo hymen is reconstructed using tissue from the vaginal mucosa. This procedure talks little long to perform.
- The sutures are dissolvable. One should allow it to heal and avoid intercourse for at least 4-6 weeks.
